A Call to Action

Dear Beloved Detroit Lakes Family,

In these challenging times, we are witnessing an unprecedented wave of division and hatred within our nation. Sadly, this fracturing touches every corner of our society, including the body of Christ. As Christians, we are called not only to bear witness to God’s love but also to actively live out the teachings of our faith in ways that embody justice, mercy, and humility. In this endeavor, we can draw inspiration from Micah 6:8, which reminds us of our divine calling:

“(God) has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.”

Acting Justly

To "act justly" means to advocate for fairness and righteousness in our world. It requires us to examine the systems that perpetuate injustice—racism, economic disparity, and social inequities—and to take a stand against them. As Christians, we are called to lift the voices of the marginalized and oppressed, standing alongside those who are frequently silenced.

In practical terms, this might mean engaging in advocacy work, supporting policies that promote equality, and utilizing our platforms—both online and in-person—to challenge injustice boldly. Our faith compels us to ensure that our actions are rooted in love and guided by the principles set forth in the Gospel, emphasizing the dignity and worth of every individual.

Loving Mercy

"To love mercy" is a profound call to compassion and forgiveness. In a world that often reacts with anger and disdain, we are invited to embody a different spirit—one that reflects Christ’s unwavering love. This means reaching out to those who have wronged us, extending grace to those who may not understand or agree with our perspectives, and embracing our shared humanity.

As United Methodists, we can promote healing by encouraging dialogue and understanding, even in situations where deep differences exist. By actively choosing mercy, we build bridges instead of walls, teaching not only our communities but also the broader world that love can transform hearts and lives.

Walking Humbly

Lastly, to "walk humbly with your God" reminds us of the importance of humility in our lives and interactions. In a climate where many seem quick to judge, let us model a spirit of openness and repentance. Recognizing our own imperfections allows us to approach others with kindness and grace.

This humility also calls us to listen deeply—to hear the cries of those who feel alienated, and to consider the perspectives of those we may disagree with. It requires us to set aside our own agendas and biases in favor of seeking God’s heart in all matters.

A Call to Action

As we navigate these turbulent waters, let us recommit ourselves to the teachings of Micah 6:8. Let us strive to embody justice, mercy, and humility in all areas of our lives. Our faith should be a beacon of hope, challenging the division and hatred that seek to engulf our communities.

Engage in Conversations: Seek out those with differing views. Listen to understand, not just to respond. Create spaces for dialogue that promotes mutual respect.

Support Local Initiatives: Find organizations that work towards justice and mercy within your community. Consider volunteering your time or donating resources to help their missions.

Cultivate a Heart of Mercy: Practice forgiveness in your daily life. Share stories of grace and mercy with others, igniting conversations that inspire compassion.

Pray for Guidance: Make it a point to pray for those who oppose us as much as we pray for ourselves. Ask God to open our hearts and minds to God’s will.

Together, let us rise as a community that shines a light in dark places, embodying the transformative love of Christ. May our lives reflect the beauty of God's justice, mercy, and humility.

In Christ’s love,

Pastor Leslie
